We have just heard news (12.5.08) that there will be no shipment of RC lasers into the UK for some time. Please note that I will not renew my stock of small parts (not that there is many around!) until the Laser is available as a complete unit and then we will reevaluate.

Racelines has taken over the production of the RC Laser bow bumper, new colours have been added to the range. St.Georges cross and the Union Jack, are proving popular as are the fluroescent colours.

The Radio Control laser.
The One Design RC Laser is a durable lightweight boat with a decent performance to allow us to sail them to a high standard. The low cost, just £325 for the standard boat, allows more sailors to afford to get into radio sailing. Sailing the 1/4 scale RC Laser is not just about racing but competition gives us an extra felipe and provides a rush of adrenaline every time the start sequence runs. It has a worldwide class association working on behalf of its members to promote and run RC Laser class events.

Hull: - Blowmoulded in polyethylene to a high grade finish, it has the ability to cope with everyday knocks and scrapes on and off the water. The construction will last and last and will not degrade or misshape over time. It is advisable if racing with other classes of RC boats to use a bow bumper to protect the other classes. To keep the hull in good condition a wipe down with soapy water, cream cleanser from the kitchen will get rid of any dirty fingerprints.

Rig: - The lightweight laminar sails are all one design and show that the only real tuning needed to race is with the rig. Care is as with the hull, wash down with clean water after use. They can be stored in the RC Laser bag or a Racelines rig bag, all three sizes rigged ready to go, with the outhaul loosened off. Rolling them does not work. The standard nylon sheeting line can stretch slightly under heavy loads and can be replaced with Dyneema or similar line and inserting a elastic/bungee cord on the out side of the sheets will give greater battery life by not making the winch work so much. Two more sliders can be added to allow control of the Cunningham type sail adjustment. Fishing beads or heat shrink on the slider ends, improve the control and save your fingers!

Electronics: - The RC Laser electronics are factory fitted and do not need to be touched. An application of light waterproof grease or Vaseline under the winch drum and servo horns are all that is needed to maintain the waterproofing of the working parts. A small amount of bluetack/plastercine to the arial outlet will stop any water ingress. The aerial can be gently pulled from the deck exit and extended along the deck (put a slight 'dog-leg' in it, always shows some part of the aerial to the transmitter), laid and taped, to practise good management of the receiver reception. Using the transmitter aerial in an upright mode assists the correct transmission between the transmitter and receiver, as does batteries in good condition.

The Laser Bag: - A useful addition, the bag allows the storage and transportation of all the RC Laser parts in one padded bag. They come in a blue colour! Two boats can be stored/transported at a time if needed. Excellent Value!

Ballast & Rudder: - Washdown and store flat, that’s it! Put the trailing edge of the fin/ballast in towards the middle of the bag, stops it being knocked and cracking the plastic covering. Use kitchen cream cleanser to get rid of greasy fingerprints.

		electrical Heatshrink is suggested as a covering for the slider ends, cut to 1/4" long and fit over, heat with a lighter.
	'D' sails, for those wild days, fits onto the standard 'B' mast, incudes a short boom and three sliders. £25 Extend the wind range of your Laser, an excellent bit of kit. Made from laminated scrim type sailcoth,it has a lower centre of effort than the C rig. I estimate that the top end of the 'C' rig is about 30 knots for most sailors and can be used from about 14 knots. The 'D' rig is usuable from about 15 knots up to about 40 knots depending on your ability and tuning and water conditions of course. *Top Tip*:- Use a bowsie at the top and have a greater range of shape and twist, it can also be set lower. You are not reliant on the clew outhaul for control of the sail. **This rig can now be used at indicated events for 2007, UK Nationals etc. The UK class association has said that it is now up to the individual clubs to indicate if it is to be allowed for an event.** If you do not wish to buy another mast, use the 'B' rig one to swop between 'C' and 'D' rigs as you are more likely to need those if the wind rises.
